The population of people aged 65 and over in the United States is expected to grow from 25 million in 2000 to 88.5 million by 2050, taking the total share of the 65+ population from 12 percent to 20 percent of the total population. According to the United States Census Bureau, 20.8 percent of the total population in North Miami Beach is aged 50-64 and 13.9 percent is aged 65 and over and the number of older North Miami Beach residents is projected to continue to increase.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has developed a Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities to encourage and promote public policies to increase the number of cities and communities that support healthy aging and thereby improve the health, well-being, satisfaction, and quality of life for older residents. This Global Network focuses on eight specific domains that target different areas of healthy aging:
1. Outdoor Spaces and Buildings
2. Transportation
3. Housing
4. Social Participation
5. Respect and Social Inclusion
6. Civic Participation and Employment
7. Communication and Information
8. Community Support and Health Services
Membership to the ARRP Network of Age-Friendly States and Communities ensures that our planning process, including community revitalization and economic development, include the needs of all people regardless of age, income, physical ability, race, and other factors of older adults.
